Sainsbury’s leads sales growth among major UK supermarkets as grocery prices decline

Sainsbury’s sales experienced a 10.7% surge, outpacing competitors Tesco and Asda, which saw growth of 10.2% and 10.5%, respectively. Kantar’s latest market share data revealed that Morrisons’ revenue increased by 2.5%, marking its strongest performance since April 2021. The fastest-growing grocer was German discounter Aldi, with an impressive 24% rise in sales, closely followed by Lidl at 22.3%. Grocery price inflation witnessed a significant drop, declining for the fourth consecutive month to 14.9% in the four weeks leading to July 9. The decrease is attributed to increased supermarket promotions that brought down prices. Retailers introduced more loyalty member pricing, contributing to a rise in promotional spending and driving the slowdown in inflation. However, the rate remains relatively high compared to the previous year, impacting the average annual household grocery bill.
