Kantar shares the grocery market share of different grocers from EMEA and APAC regions

The grocery industry has made some dramatic changes in view of the changing grocery landscape, consumer behaviour, and needs. Companies had to alter their business models in a 360-degree manner due to the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Some grocers continued building the momentum to seize market share and remained the market leaders. 

Kantar, a leading data, insights, and consulting firm, recently shared the grocery market share data of selected regions from the EMEA and APAC countries. Kantar procured the data from the research of Worldpanel and included the purchasing patterns of about 20,000 demographically representative households. Kantar based this data on the total value of products purchased by shoppers over a specific time period. The data included different grocery markets, including France, Ireland, Great Britain, Spain, and China from the APAC territory. Let’s have a look at the data from European grocery markets: 

France 

In the French grocery market, Groupement E. Leclerc, a chain of supermarkets, remained the champion (+0.6pt) in the last decade and has a market share of 22.5%. Carrefour becomes the second grocer, with a market share of 20.5%, to have the highest grocery market share in the country. Groupement Les Mousquetaires ranks third with a 15.7% market share. The data also revealed the market share of the following grocers from France: Groupement U (11.3%), Auchan Retail (9.4%), Casino (7.4%), Lidl (7.1%), Aldi (2.8%), and Autres (0.9%). 68% of customers love to visit the brand Lidl frequently because of its affordable grocery essentials. 

Spain 

Mercadona remained the market winner as its market share is the highest (26.5%) compared to other grocers in the Spanish grocery market. Grupo Carrefour has the second-highest market share percentage (9.7%). Lidl is ranked third with a market share of 5.3%. Grupo Dia (4.6%), Grupo Eroski (4.3%), Consum Coop. (3.2%), and Alcampo (3.1%). The data is collected from the years 2018 to 2022. 

 Ireland 

In the Irish grocery market, Dunnes has seized most of the market share (22.4%), followed by SuperValu (21.8%) and Tesco (21.7%). Lidl and Aldi stayed close with a market share of 13.0% and 12.1%, respectively. Other grocery brands grabbed about 0.9% of the total market share in the country. 

Great Britain 

Tesco enjoyed the highest market share (27.3%) in Great Britain. After Tesco, Sainsbury has total sales of 15.0% and is ranked the second grocer with the highest market share. Asda ranked third (14.1%), Morrisons fourth (9.5%), Aldi fifth (8.8%) and Lidl ranked sixth (6.6%). Waitrose has a market share of 4.8%, and other grocers have 2.0% of the share during the last decade. 

Now we will look at the market share data of grocers from various parts of China: 

National China

Kantar included the data from 2020, 2021, and 2022 while taking the market share of grocers from National China into account. Sun Art G. has the highest market share percentage (8.4%) in the National Chinese region. Yonghui G. holds the second rank with a 5.9% market share. Vanguard, a grocer carrying Tesco products, is ranked third in the report (5.7%). 

China North 

In the northern part of China, Sun Art G. emerged as the winner for the second time. The grocer has a market share of 7.7%. Wu-Mart G. has a market share of 6.0%, followed by SPAR G./SPAR grocer that has a 4.4% market share. Yonghui G. and Vanguard G. (Tesco) have a 3.9% and 3.1% market share, respectively.

China South 

Wal-Mart G. has the highest sales with a market share of 10.4% in this region. WSL G. holds 7.5% of the market share, Yonghui G. (56%), and Vanguard G.+Tesco grabs (5.4%). 

China East 

In the eastern part of China, Sun Art G. has the highest share of sales (16.7%). Vanguard G. (+Tesco) continues to stay successful with a market share of 9.8% in this region. Bailian G. is the third brand to have the highest market share (8.2%). 

China West 

Yonghui G., Wal-Mart G., and Wu-Mart G. have performed well in this region while having 10.0%, 6.8%, and 4.0% market sales, respectively. Vanguard G. (+Tesco) holds fourth position with a total market share of 3.8%.
