Grocers focus tech budgets on labour, security, and digital channels in 2024

A Grocery Doppio report by Incisiv and Wynshop reveals that grocers are tightening their technology budgets for 2024, focusing on key areas such as labour shortages, security, fulfilment, and digital channels. The “State of Digital Grocery Performance Scorecard Q3 2023” highlights that 71% of grocers do not plan to increase their overall technology budgets in 2024, but 83% intend to invest more in digital technology. They also aim to boost their tech budgets for security (67%) and artificial intelligence (79%). Only 18% of grocers plan to allocate more to their overall technology budgets, with an estimated increase averaging 4.3%. The report also shows a shift in the digital grocery landscape, with digital sales increasing in the third quarter but the category’s portion of the overall market declining to 12.9%. Total grocery sales rose to $236 billion in Q3, up from $226 billion in the previous quarter. Third-party apps lost market share, and retailers are becoming more strategic in their technology spending, emphasising digital channels, security, and AI.
