Cheers to unique shopping experiences: Retailers embrace in-store bars and pubs

Retailers are creating in-store bars and pubs as part of their efforts to create unique shopping experiences. Many are hosting happy hours and special events, offering drinks and entertainment to their customers over the age of 21. For example, Mariano’s, a Midwest banner of The Kroger Co., hosts “Live at Mariano’s” performances on Friday evenings at its bars in Chicago. Similarly, Gelson’s operates 15 wine and tapas bars in Southern California and Whole Foods Market and Lowe’s Foods have also launched their own pubs. Retailers are using their bars to showcase locally sourced products, often from small businesses, and offer customers the chance to taste new products. These spaces are seen as a way to foster community and create a destination within the store.
