Amazon is prioritising sustainability as a core strategy, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 through its Climate Pledge. Leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning, the company accelerates efforts to meet these goals. Vice President Kara Hurst highlights AI’s role in addressing climate challenges with agility and scale. Notably, Amazon employs the Packaging Decision Engine, an AI model optimising packaging efficiency based on item characteristics and customer feedback, reducing over two million tonnes of packaging since 2015. AI also enhances waste reduction by identifying damaged goods more effectively and improving fit recommendations to minimise returns. In food sustainability, AI automates shelf monitoring and redirects imperfect produce for recycling. Amazon integrates various data points, employing algorithms like Flamingo to assess environmental impact swiftly. AI’s role in sustainability remains pivotal, driving Amazon’s commitment to building a more eco-friendly business.
