Aldi rolls out a limited trial of cashierless checkout machines in New South Wales stores

Aldi, a German discount grocer, has launched a limited number of self-service checkout machines. The grocer will place the checkout machines at ten NSW stores initially for trial. Each of the stores will have 8-10 self-service machines. A store in Darlinghurst, Sydney was the first to install these machines. Shoppers are enjoying this innovative checkout system so far, as per Aldi’s spokesperson. The machine tallies the products in the cart and lets the customer make payments through cards.

Flipkart ramps up its supply chain infrastructure by adding a new fulfilment centre

As an effort to expand its supply chain infrastructure, Flipkart has added a new fulfilment centre in Patna, India. The Walmart-owned retailer’s latest fulfilment centre will offer prompt delivery in Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, and various other cities in India. The newest Flipkart’s grocery fulfilment centre has an area of nearly 53,000 square feet. Flipkart will open five more fulfilment centres across all of India in the next quarter.

VegEase, an Indian digital fresh produce delivery startup, is expanding its premium cart-at-home service to the Indian National Capital Region (NCR). The startup offers pickup and home delivery of organic fruits and vegetables. VegEase decided to expand to metropolitan cities of India as it saw its consumer base doubling after its launch. It will be operational across all major cities in south and west India soon. The firm has targeted a turnover of INR 40 million in the current fiscal year. VegEase has achieved a turnover of INR 9 million since its founding date.

Nextdoor app has tens of millions of users signed up and have their verified home addresses registered. The data can be useful for retailers with a hyperlocal focus on marketing strategies. Retailers like Stop & Shop, Imperfect Foods, and Hershey’s have invested in Nextdoor over the last year. Retailers are looking to invest in such networking apps to run heavily localised ad campaigns and gain customer data.

Amazon has invested in Anycart, an online grocery firm that offers ingredients to find and cook any recipe. The firms are working on a strategy to urge consumers to make more impulsive online purchases through online product recommendations. This partnership includes Albertsons and Ahold Delhaize to offer shoppable recipes via Anycart. Anycart passes on online orders to retailers like Amazon, Whole Foods, Vons, Ahold Delhaize, and Giant to deliver groceries to customers. Anycart lets the retailers retain customer data.
