The British automation provider, Ocado Group, has acquired autonomous mobile robot (AMR) maker 6 River Systems (6RS) from Shopify, allowing Ocado to expand its catalog of automation tools. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Shopify originally purchased 6 River Systems in 2019 for $450 million. Ocado plans to leverage 6RS’ collaborative fulfilment solutions to enter new markets beyond e-commerce grocery, including general merchandise retail, apparel, health and beauty, and third-party logistics (3PL). The acquisition provides Ocado with access to 6RS’ “Chuck” AMRs, which have been utilised by over 70 customers and 100 warehouses globally. By integrating 6RS’ technology and expertise, Ocado aims to enhance its capabilities in non-grocery retail segments and further develop its position in the automation industry.
