The importance of sustainability in retail store design has grown, with almost twice as many executives identifying it as a priority in 2023 as in 2022, according to Retail TouchPoints’ Store Design and Experience Survey. Design teams are expanding their contributions to corporate ESG efforts in order to integrate sustainability into every facet of their work, from raw materials to the use of greenery and natural light in finished designs. The focus on achieving LEED certification for design, construction, and operation standards has largely been replaced by strategies that look at the longevity of a building to support sustainability goals. Store design teams are also considering tactical decisions, such as fixtures, graphics, and materials, that can adapt to new store functions and ultimately ladder up to corporate sustainability goals. Biophilic design concepts, such as live greenery, natural lighting, and recycling and upcycling, are also being integrated into designs to create sustainable and healthier environments. Design firms are also partnering with material vendors who prioritise transparency so they can provide evidence of the sustainability and environmental impact of their materials and production processes.
