Fostering mental well-being and mindfulness: Retailers’ role in lifestyle choices

In the pursuit of mental well-being and mindfulness, consumers are increasingly turning to lifestyle choices such as diet, meditation, and physical practices like yoga. Mental well-being involves feeling content and finding meaning in life, while mindfulness emphasises being present in the moment without judgement to reduce stress and improve mental health. Retailers are uniquely positioned to provide consumers with solutions and tools to support these endeavors. According to the 2023 Food and Health Survey by the International Food Information Council (IFIC), 74% of Americans believe that the food they consume significantly impacts their mental and emotional well-being, while 61% think the reverse is also true. Stress plays a significant role in influencing food choices, with 51% of those who report stress affecting their food choices negatively. Retail dietitians can educate shoppers on the connection between food and mood, offering science-based advice to manage caffeine intake, stabilise blood sugar, and alleviate stress-related digestive issues. Furthermore, the surge in mindfulness-based practices like meditation, yoga, and tai chi provides an opportunity for retailers to provide classes and resources for promoting mental well-being. Retailers can support their employees’ mental wellness as well, as evidenced by initiatives from companies like Walmart and Sam’s Club, fostering a more holistic approach to well-being.
