Effective ways to control postharvest losses in the agricultural supply chain

With the global population expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, food insecurity is one of the biggest challenges lately. The reasons for food scarcity include lower crop yields, climate changes, soil degradation and water scarcity. Postharvest loss impacts fresh produce, grains and pulses. Many farmers dry the harvest on the ground and expose it to contamination, rodent and pests. Reducing waste after harvest by 75% could result in gains equivalent to three times the cropland area of France approximately and it also boosts agricultural output. Advanced technological solutions such as mechanical reapers and multi-crop mechanized threshers can be an effective solution. Usage of dry bags, and gas-based dryers can save the harvest from rodents. For storing and processing harvest, farmers should use hermetic storage and advanced milling machines. Low-tech desiccant beads and drying bags are handy for transporting crops.
