Dollar General is testing cashierless technology in one of its North Carolina stores in partnership with AI retail tech company AiFi. The discount retailer is experimenting with frictionless technology, similar to Amazon’s “just walk out” concept, which uses cameras to track items shoppers take from the store. While Dollar General currently has no plans to expand the technology, it aims to continue testing and learning from the pilot. Cashierless technology has gained traction in recent years, led by Amazon, but traditional grocers have been hesitant to adopt it. Dollar General recently lowered its expectations for 2023 following mixed Q1 results, revising net sales and same-store sales growth projections. The retailer also scaled back its growth plans, aiming to complete fewer projects this year.
