A report by the Smart AgriFood Observatory of Politecnico di Milano and Università degli Studi di Brescia reveals that agrifood was the fourth-largest sector in terms of application of blockchain technology in 2021, accounting for 6% of overall pilot and operating projects. Blockchain technology is used mainly to exploit commercial and marketing opportunities (54%), and to improve coordination among supply chain players (47%). Environmental and social sustainability is a growing concern, accounting for 26% of projects, while 13% relate to food safety and 11% are related to anti-counterfeiting. The report shows that blockchain technology is not the sole solution for traceability and that it is better used in conjunction with other technological solutions, such as IoT and mobile apps.
